Our Horses

Making the world a better place for the horses who need us.

Sullivan

Sullivan came to BEHS as part of a seizure. He had been neglected for quite some time, and he wasn’t sure people were his friends. He quickly gained weight once he got good food, but it took longer for him to like people. His foster “mom” began training and riding him and used him in the 2010 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. His adopter was at the Expo and saw him in the Challenge. She fell in love and adopted him to become her trail riding horse. She returned him in 2016 after a job change forced her to move. He was re-adopted quickly but returned because he was too much horse for his adopters. He moved to a new foster home and they began working with him. He fit in so well with their group and was progressing well under saddle, so they decided to adopt him!

Background
Nothing is known of Sullivan's history before he arrived at Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. While at Bluebonnet, he was ridden by a foster home and competed in the Foster Horse Under Saddle Division of the 2010 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. He was adopted and his training continued.
Personality & Manners
Training & Abilities
Sullivan is slow to trust new people, possibly due to bad past treatment. His former adopter worked with him with natural horsemanship techniques. She says he does well with groundwork and suggests any adopter spend some time on groundwork to establish trust with him. She said he can be nervous about saddling and bridling if ridden infrequently, but he does well with consistent work. His former adopter rode him in the pasture and on trail rides. She says he has a great, ground-covering walk that covers lots of ground quickly. It has been quite a while since he's been ridden regularly, so he'll need an adopter willing to bring him back to work. Update June 2016: His foster home is working with Sullivan. They've been handling him on the ground, saddling him, etc. and working with him on the longe line. They're not riding him yet, but he's doing well at coming back to work and will be gaining fitness thanks to the ground work they're doing.
Care Needs & Behavior
Sullivan has no known health or lamenss problems.
